DIY taco night or a caterer?

A DIY taco night is possible for a crowd, but it is more work than it looks. Fillings need slow cooking, tortillas need warming as you go, and salsas need making. Our taco bar guide explains how.

If you do it yourself, work out quantities first: see how many tacos per person. Keep tortillas warm in a covered basket, and label dishes for guests with allergies.

Mexican catering for your event in Newtown Common

We slow-cook the fillings ahead and finish them on site, and the salsas and guacamole are freshly made. Tortillas are warmed as we serve. It works well for big birthday celebrations and leaving dos and retirement parties, with quesadillas, fresh salsas and guacamole and burrito bowls.

Somewhere as small as Newtown Common, a garden or field is often the venue. Tell us about narrow lanes, gates and long drives and we’ll plan for them, and soft ground after rain is worth mentioning. Timings are planned around your event, whether that is speeches, a lunch break or a festival schedule.

Working with your venue

Events in public spaces, like parks, normally need permission. We’ll provide the information the landowner or council asks for from us.

Many venues have rules for outside caterers: vehicle access, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we will work to it.

Prices and what affects them

The same guest numbers can mean different prices, because of:

  • Your choice of food and drinks
  • Serving staff
  • Whether you add a drinks bar or food
  • Plates, napkins and cutlery

Access and travel can make a difference to the cost, so it helps to tell us about your venue. Your quote confirms the full price.

What to tell us

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • What you’d like on the menu
  • Gate widths, slopes and the ground
  • Expected numbers
  • A picture of where we’d park

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: venue, timings, menu ideas and access. When you’re ready, tell us about it on our contact page.

Common questions in Newtown Common

Could you serve our guests after a service at Church of St Mary and St John the Baptist?

Yes. The church itself isn’t where we’d set up, but a hall, field or garden close by with room for the truck or trailer can work well. Let us know the reception address and we will check the access.

How far is Newtown Common from London?

It is about 54 miles from central London, and inside the area we cover.

Can you cater for vegetarians and vegans?

Of course. Vegetarian and vegan fillings, such as spiced mushrooms or black beans, can be part of the menu, served alongside the meat options.

What if the weather’s bad?

We can serve from the hatch in the rain. Plan cover for guests, such as a marquee or gazebo, and let us know if the ground gets soft after heavy rain.

Can you serve drinks as well?

Our drinks bar can be added to any booking, with bar staff serving margaritas, Mexican beer and aguas frescas. We’ll go through the licensing with you before the day.

Do you cater in Newtown Common?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, including Newtown Common. For a quote, tell us about it on our contact page.

Do you have gluten-free options?

Yes, we offer gluten-free options, using corn tortillas. Tell us about any coeliac guests before the event so we can explain how we prepare their food. See are corn tortillas gluten-free?

Do you cater for big events?

That depends on the event. Most bookings fall around 50 to 400 guests, but tell us your numbers and we’ll take it from there.

Planning the serving area

We’ll be honest if a space won’t work, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • A spot away from buildings, windows and neighbours
  • Agreement from the venue to bring a food truck or trailer on site
  • A spot for a taco-bar serving table

Not sure about your space? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Dietary needs and planning tips

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Try these:

  • Send allergy details to us in writing
  • Tell us what other food is being served
  • Give us separate numbers for children
  • Ask guests with severe allergies to talk to us before the event

On the day, we arrive in good time to park up and get ready. Someone from the venue just needs to point us to the agreed spot.

Quesadillas go down well with children.

How it works

Service is quick and friendly: we serve from the hatch or a serving station, so a crowd is looked after quickly. When service ends, we pack down. Evenings in Newtown Common stay light until about 9:25pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:10pm. For anything running past sunset, think about lights near the hatch.

  1. You tell us the date, the venue, rough guest numbers and any dietary needs.
  2. You get a suggested menu, with fillings agreed with you, and a quote.
  3. We check access, power and water with you or the venue.
  4. We arrive, set up and cook to order, with salsas and guacamole made fresh.
  5. After service, we clear away and leave the spot tidy.

Getting ready for the day

  • Confirm numbers and diets before the day
  • Tell us about narrow gates or low branches
  • Name one person we can ask on the day
