Gatcombe: your questions answered

Will you travel to a small place like Gatcombe?

Yes, small places are no problem, given access. Let us know about access and parking for the truck or trailer.

Could you serve our guests after a service at St. Olave's Church?

Yes. The church itself isn’t where we’d set up, but a hall, field or garden close by with room for the truck or trailer can work well. Let us know the reception address and we’ll check the access.

What does Mexican bar hire cost?

Every event is quoted individually, so the price fits what you want. Give us your date, numbers and menu ideas for a clear quote.

What about power on site?

Let us know what’s available on site, such as a supply from the venue near where we will park, and we’ll confirm what we need with your quote.

What do you need at the venue?

A level, firm spot for the truck or trailer, with access wide and high enough to drive in, and the venue’s agreement. We confirm power and water with you for each booking.

What can we have at the bar?

Margaritas, Mexican beer, aguas frescas and soft drinks. We plan the list with you.

How is the food prepared?

We slow-cook fillings ahead, then finish them and keep them hot at your event. Tortillas are warmed on site, and salsas and guacamole are made fresh.

Do you have alcohol-free drinks?

Every bar has alcohol-free choices, from aguas frescas to soft drinks.

Tips for a smooth bar

A few tips to help the bar run smoothly:

  • Check allergies with guests, including for drinks
  • Ask your venue about its licence early
  • Pair the bar with hot food
  • Allow time for a Temporary Event Notice if one is needed

Responsible serving comes first: no alcohol for under-18s, and we may refuse service to anyone who has had too much.

Soft drinks for drivers.

Planning the serving area

If a space is not suitable, we will tell you, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • Permission from the venue or landowner
  • Room for a queue
  • Firm, level ground where we can set up

Gatcombe is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey and access for the truck or trailer.

Not sure about your space? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Drinks receptions around Gatcombe

Gatcombe is about 2 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. From the centre of Gatcombe to the outskirts, Mexican bar hire works the same way: fresh service from our food truck or trailer, every diet planned for and a clear quote. We serve in all 125 towns and villages in the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. Our truck and trailer cover the area from Gatcombe to Southampton (about 18 miles away).

Nearby historic houses include Gatcombe House (under half a mile south-east) and Sheat Manor (0.5 miles south-east). Grand houses and estates tend to have firm rules on alcohol and outside bars, so raise the drinks bar with them early. Historic buildings near Gatcombe often have strict rules for outside caterers, so ask early if that is your venue.

We serve at events all over the PO30 postcode area and the streets around it. From Gatcombe Road, Rectory Lane and Newbarn Lane or anywhere nearby, we will plan where to park and serve. Nearby, we also cater events in Chillerton (1 mile south), Plaish (2 miles north-west), Clatterford (2 miles north), Bowcombe (2 miles north-west) and Carisbrooke (2 miles north). Further out, we also cater in Ryde (8 miles north-east), Cowes (6 miles north), Sandown (6 miles east), Shanklin (6 miles east), Ventnor (6 miles south-east) and East Cowes (6 miles north). Remote venues take a little more planning, so contact us in good time about access, ground and power.

Other landmarks nearby include Carisbrooke Castle (1.6 miles north) and Isle of Wight Music Museum (2.5 miles north). Green spaces nearby include Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Brighstone Down.

  • Nearby schools include Christ The King College (2.1 miles north)

Occasions we cater for in Gatcombe

A drinks bar with a theme gives guests something to talk about, more than a standard bar.

These are some of the occasions we serve around Gatcombe:

  • Garden get-togethers
  • Birthday parties
  • Anniversaries and engagements
  • Winter celebrations

If the service is at a church such as St. Olave's Church, the bar would be set up at the reception venue rather than the church.

What your quote should include

  • How dietary needs and allergies are handled
  • Where to see their hygiene rating
  • If the price includes VAT
  • How long the service runs

Questions to ask before you book

Is Mexican bar hire right for your event?

A self-service drinks table is simple but can run dry or go warm. A staffed bar keeps everything under control. The cost per head can fall as numbers rise, because the set-up is similar for different sizes of event. Give us your numbers and we will quote.

Why us?

  • We cover Gatcombe and the whole of the Isle of Wight
  • Book food, drinks or both
  • Service planned around your numbers
  • Allergen information for every dish

See our pricing or the cost guide.

How it works

The truck or trailer tends to draw a crowd, so we plan a spot with space for people to queue. Rain does not usually stop us serving, but guests will need somewhere covered. At midsummer, it’s light in Gatcombe until about 9:20pm, so evening drinks can be served in daylight. By late September, sunset is about 7:10pm, and in December it’s dark by about 4:00pm, so plan lighting around the bar.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We check the licensing with you.
  3. We agree a drinks menu.
  4. Our bar staff serve your guests at the agreed times.
  5. We pack down when the bar closes.

Before we arrive

  • Measure any gates or arches on the way in
  • Have a marquee or gazebo ready in case of rain
  • Confirm numbers and diets before the day

DIY taco night versus a caterer

Plenty of people try a DIY taco night at home. Common snags are cold tortillas, uneven quantities and the host missing the party. If you’d rather enjoy the party, let us serve.

You can set up your own drinks table, but someone still has to mix, pour and keep an eye on it all evening. Our margarita bar guide has tips.

  • The menu you choose
  • Whether you add a drinks bar or food
