Hot food for your fair
A school fair, PTA event or community day needs food that’s quick to serve and easy to eat standing up. Tacos, quesadillas, burrito bowls and nachos fit well. Families can grab something hot between the tombola and the sports races, and the queue moves steadily.
We serve from our truck or trailer, so we need a pitch rather than a hall kitchen. That leaves your volunteers for the cake stall and the raffle.
What we need on the pitch
- Level, firm ground. A playground, car park or hardstanding is ideal. A field can work in dry weather.
- Access. A way in wide and high enough for the truck or trailer, ideally away from where children will be walking once the fair opens.
- Arrival time. We’ll want to be parked and set up before the gates open, so vehicles aren’t moving among families.
- Space for a queue. Keep the queue clear of other stalls and paths.
- Power and water. Tell us what’s available. We confirm these with each booking.
Our guide to food truck space and power explains these in more detail.
How fairs work with caterers
Every school and community group has its own way of working with food traders. Some charge a pitch fee. Some ask for a share of takings to go towards school funds. Others book a caterer to serve guests at an agreed cost. How that works is agreed between the school and the trader. Tell us what you have in mind, and we’ll discuss what we can do and confirm it in writing.
Food for children and families
Children tend to like simple food. Plain cheese quesadillas, mild chicken tacos and nachos are good choices. Chilli and hot salsa stay on the side, so families can choose. Smaller portions can help too. Our guide to Mexican food for children has more ideas.
We offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options, and we give allergen information for every dish. With lots of children at a fair, allergen information matters. We can send it before the day so you can share it with parents.

Summer and Christmas fairs
Summer fairs mean sun and long queues, so think about shade near the truck. Christmas fairs are often dark by late afternoon, so plan lighting near the queue. Our Christmas catering page covers winter events.
For larger public events, see our festival and street-food catering page.
Planning checklist for organisers
- Get permission. Check with the head teacher, governors or site manager that a food vehicle can come on site.
- Choose the pitch. Level, firm ground with clear access, away from play equipment.
- Set times. Arrival, opening, serving and pack-down times.
- Estimate visitors. A rough number helps us plan how much food to bring.
- Agree the arrangement. Pitch fee, share of takings or a booked service, agreed in writing.
- Ask what paperwork you need. Our page for event organisers covers what events often ask traders for.

Questions
How do pitch fees or a share of takings work?
Every fair does it differently. Some charge traders a pitch fee, some ask for a share of takings, and some book a caterer to serve guests at an agreed cost. Tell us what your fair has in mind and we’ll discuss it with you.
Do you have food children will eat?
Usually, yes. Plain quesadillas, mild chicken tacos and nachos are popular with children. Chilli is easy to leave off, and hot salsa stays on the side. Our guide to how spicy Mexican food is explains more.
Do you need power?
Tell us what power is available at your site, such as an outdoor socket or a supply from the school building. We confirm power and water with each booking.
Can you park on a playground or field?
A playground or car park is ideal, because it’s level and firm. A field is possible in dry weather, but soft ground can stop a vehicle getting in. We’ll agree a plan with you.
What about allergies?
We give allergen information for every dish and can share it before the fair. We can’t promise an allergen-free kitchen, so parents of children with severe allergies should check with us on the day or before.
