Mexican food that suits most diets

Mexican street food is a good fit for mixed dietary needs. Beans, rice, corn, vegetables, salsas and guacamole are naturally plant-based. Corn tortillas suit most gluten-free guests. Cheese and soured cream are toppings, not the base of a dish, so they’re easy to leave off.

That means vegan and vegetarian guests don’t get a lesser plate. They choose from the same kind of tacos, burritos, bowls and nachos as everyone else, with fillings made for them.

Sample plant-based fillings

  • Spiced mushroom, cooked with chilli, garlic and herbs
  • Black bean and sweet potato, roasted and seasoned
  • Refried or whole black beans with rice in burritos and bowls
  • Grilled vegetables in quesadillas or bowls

These are examples. Your menu is put together for your event, and we’ll confirm it with your quote. If you want to try a plant-based taco at home, our vegan tacos recipe is a good start.

How we keep options separate

Mixed menus need care at the serving hatch. We plan the menu so vegan and vegetarian fillings have their own containers and their own serving spoons, and we label every dish. Ask us how this will work on your menu and we’ll talk you through it.

If most of your guests are vegan or vegetarian, a fully plant-based menu is often simpler. Everyone eats the same food, queues move faster and nobody has to ask what’s in each dish.

Gluten-free and corn tortillas

Corn tortillas are made from maize, so they’re usually gluten-free. Some brands add wheat, so we check labels for every event. Burrito bowls and nachos are other gluten-free choices, because they skip the flour tortilla. Burritos and quesadillas use flour tortillas, which contain gluten.

We can’t promise that any dish has no traces of gluten, because flour tortillas are warmed in the same truck or trailer. If you have coeliac guests, tell us when you book so we can talk it through. Our guide to whether corn tortillas are gluten-free has more detail.

Dairy-free guests

Most of the menu can be dairy-free. Leave off the cheese and soured cream, and choose salsas and guacamole instead. Loaded nachos can be made with a dairy-free alternative to cheese. Tell us how many dairy-free guests you expect so we can plan for them.

Allergen information

We give allergen information for every dish, covering the 14 allergens that UK law requires food businesses to declare. You can share it with guests before the day.

We can’t promise an allergen-free kitchen. If a guest has a severe allergy, talk to us before you book.

Read more in our dietary needs guide and our guide to allergens at events.

Planning for dietary needs

  1. Collect dietary needs early. Add a question to your invitations or RSVP form, and ask about allergies as well as preferences.
  2. Send us the numbers. Tell us how many vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free guests to expect, and any allergies.
  3. Agree the menu. We’ll suggest fillings and toppings that cover everyone, and send allergen information with your quote.
  4. Share it with guests. Labelled dishes and a clear menu board help guests choose for themselves on the day.

We offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options at weddings, parties, work events and festivals. See our sample menu, or contact us for a quote.

Questions

Can the whole menu be vegan?

Yes, if you’d like it to be. A fully plant-based menu of tacos, bowls, nachos and salsas works well, and nobody has to check which dish is which. Tell us when you ask for a quote.

Are your corn tortillas gluten-free?

Corn tortillas are usually made from maize flour, which has no gluten, but some brands add wheat. We check the labels for your event and include them in the allergen information. Our corn tortilla guide explains more.

Is your kitchen allergen-free?

No. We can’t promise that any dish is completely without traces of an allergen, because we cook several dishes in one truck or trailer. We give allergen information for every dish. If a guest has a severe allergy, talk to us before you book.

How do guests know which dishes are vegan?

Every dish is labelled, and we give allergen information for each one. If you’d like, the vegan options can be marked on a menu board so guests can choose without asking.

Do you cater for coeliac guests?

Tell us about any coeliac guests when you book. We’ll talk through the menu, the tortillas and how they’re warmed, so you can decide what’s right for them.
