DIY taco night versus a caterer

A DIY taco night works well for a small group. For big numbers or lots of diets, a caterer makes life easier, and handles allergen information for you.

Doing it yourself saves money, but the host ends up in the kitchen. With a caterer, you get the food and drinks without the work.

Mexican catering in London Docklands, served fresh

Taco catering in London Docklands is what we do best. Mobile Mexican catering means the kitchen comes to you: we park our truck or trailer on site and serve hot food from it. No kitchen is needed on site. Popular choices include burritos, a build-your-own taco bar and fresh salsas and guacamole, and it suits engagement and anniversary parties and milestone birthdays.

In London Docklands, a courtyard, a venue forecourt or a garden with drive access can work well. London gardens are often reached only through the house, so the truck or trailer may need to stay on a drive or the street, with permission. Tell us about the route in. We arrive ready to serve, and clear our own area when service is finished.

Dietary needs and planning tips

Nearly every event has some special diets. To cater well for them:

  • Tell us about coeliac guests, not just gluten-free preferences
  • Ensure the menu has a vegan option
  • Tell us what other food is being served
  • Ask guests about diets and allergies with your invitations

For a taco bar, we lay the fillings, salsas and toppings out on a table, and guests help themselves while we keep it topped up.

Ask us about plates, cutlery and serving staff and we will set out what we can do in your quote.

How it works

Serving is quick: guests are served at the hatch or a serving station, so even a long queue moves. Afterwards we clear our area. A December event in London Docklands will be in the dark from about 3:55pm, so choose a spot where guests can see what they’re ordering. In late June, by contrast, daylight lasts until about 9:20pm.

  1. It begins with the basics: your date, venue, guest numbers and dietary needs.
  2. We put together a menu around your guests and quote for it.
  3. Together we confirm where the truck or trailer will park, plus power and water.
  4. We arrive, set up and cook to order, with salsas and guacamole made fresh.
  5. When service ends, we pack down and clear our area.

Getting ready for the day

  • Ask the venue about power and water
  • Have level hardstanding or firm ground ready
  • Arrange somewhere covered for guests to eat

Planning help

For planners, venues and organisers

For big numbers, we plan service to keep queues short, so everyone is served promptly. Let us know how long the break is.

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers: where vehicles can park, access times and the paperwork they need. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work to it.

Comparing your options

Compared with a hog roast or barbecue, tacos make vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free guests easier to cater for, thanks to separate fillings and toppings. Catering from a truck or trailer can be a practical alternative to a sit-down meal, as there is no kitchen to hire. Ask us for a quote.

Questions to ask before booking

How we price Mexican catering

Your quote will be clear. What affects it most:

  • Serving staff
  • What’s on the menu
  • How many guests we are serving
  • Whether you add a drinks bar or food

Access, parking and the distance to your venue can affect the price, so tell us about the venue when you ask for a quote. The full price is confirmed in your quote.

What we need to know

You don’t need everything decided to ask for a quote, but it helps to know:

  • The date and rough timings
  • Where the event is
  • How we drive in and where we can park
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

Most quotes start with a few simple details: the date, where the event is, how many guests and any dietary needs. Contact us for a quote: just drop us a line using the enquiry form.

London Docklands: your questions answered

Could you serve our guests after a service at St Peter's Church?

Yes. The church itself is not where we’d set up, but a hall, field or garden close by with room for the truck or trailer can work well. Let us know the reception address and we’ll check the access.

Which station is closest to London Docklands?

Guests can use Canary Wharf station, which is right in London Docklands.

Do you have dairy-free options?

We can. Dairy-free options are part of our menus, and we’ll tell you which dishes contain milk.

Where do you cater?

We cater across London and the South East, Greater London included. Find your area.

Is there a minimum number of guests?

Truck and trailer service generally suits around 50 to 400 guests. Smaller parties are quoted case by case, and festivals can be larger. Send us your numbers and we will advise.

What’s on the menu?

Every menu is agreed with you. Fillings could include chicken tinga, pork carnitas, al pastor-style pork and vegan options like black beans. See our menu for ideas.

What happens if it rains?

We can keep serving from the truck or trailer in the rain, but your guests will want somewhere covered, like a marquee or gazebo.

How much space do you need?

The main things are access and a level spot: a firm spot for the truck or trailer, room for a queue and, for a taco bar, space for a serving table. If in doubt, send us a picture of the space and the way in.

What we need at the venue

Every venue is different, so we’ll ask about yours before we confirm. Generally, we look for:

  • Some distance from houses and neighbours
  • The venue’s or landowner’s permission for a catering vehicle
  • A route in that’s wide and tall enough, with soft ground checked in advance

In London Docklands, as everywhere in Greater London, the ULEZ applies and kerb space is limited. Where will the truck or trailer stop? A drive, a courtyard or a suspended bay can all work.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and the access, and we will advise.
