Choosing a Mexican caterer

Taco bar hire in Bonchurch: local tips

Bonchurch is about 2 miles south of Shanklin, in the Isle of Wight. We serve at events in gardens, halls and venues around Bonchurch and nearby villages. We serve in 125 places in the Isle of Wight, wherever the truck or trailer can get in. Our truck and trailer cover the area from Bonchurch to Portsmouth (about 15 miles away).

When the service is at a church such as Old St. Boniface Church, the taco bar would be set up at the reception venue rather than the church. If your garden is hard to reach, a hired hall or club around Bonchurch could take the taco bar instead. With the sea within about a mile, a taco bar at a coastal venue is an option. Open toppings and a sea breeze don’t mix, so a sheltered or indoor spot is best.

Here we cover the PO38 postcode area, and we can cater your event anywhere in it with access for the truck or trailer. Your event could be at a home on Shore Road, Leeson Road and Bonchurch Village Road. If your venue is just outside Bonchurch, we also cover Luccombe Village (1 mile north), Ventnor (1 mile west), Steephill (2 miles west), Wroxall (2 miles north-west) and Shanklin (2 miles north). Further out, we also cater in Newport (9 miles north-west), Ryde (9 miles north), Cowes (12 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles north), East Cowes (12 miles north-west) and Oakfield (8 miles north). Remote venues take a little more planning, so ask early about your event.

A little further out are Ventnor Heritage Museum (1 mile west) and Sandown Castle (4.3 miles north). Green spaces nearby include Alverstone Mead and St Boniface Down.

  • Nearby schools include The Island Free School (1.6 miles west)
  • Pubs nearby include Bonchurch Inn (less than half a mile north-west)
  • Local facilities include South Wight (0.8 miles west)

About the menu

Vegan fillings

Vegan guests get a proper filling of their own, not an afterthought.

Warm tortillas

Soft corn and flour tortillas, kept warm. The corn ones suit gluten-free guests.

Planning the serving area

Many gardens, fields and venues can take a truck or trailer, but there are a few things to check:

  • A clear route from the vehicle to the serving spot
  • Permission from the venue for us to set up
  • Cover overhead if the bar is outdoors

Bonchurch is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we will plan the journey and access for the truck or trailer.

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before booking.

Menu ideas

  • Vegan fillings
  • Pickled onions and toppings
  • Two to four fillings
  • Tortilla chips
  • Salsas and guacamole
  • Corn and flour tortillas

Your questions about taco bar hire in Bonchurch

Can you cater a reception after a service at Old St. Boniface Church?

Yes. The church itself is not where we’d set up, but a hall, field or garden close by with room for the truck or trailer can work well. Let us know the reception address and we’ll check the access.

Which station should guests use for Bonchurch?

The closest is Shanklin station, roughly 2.4 miles away.

Who looks after the taco bar?

The taco bar is served from a table or station by our staff, so your hosts don’t need to. When service ends, we clear it away.

What about power on site?

That depends on the set-up, and we agree power and water with you before the day. Let us know whether there is a supply near where we’ll park.

What access do you need?

Level, firm ground or hardstanding for the truck or trailer, and a route in it can fit through, plus the venue’s permission. Power and water arrangements are confirmed with each booking.

Can the taco bar cater for special diets?

Fillings and toppings sit in separate dishes, which helps with mixed diets, but we can’t promise an allergen-free kitchen. Anyone with a severe allergy should speak to us before the event.

Can you do dairy-free food?

Yes, on request. Let us know your dairy-free numbers, and we will plan the menu around them.

Is the food made fresh?

Food is cooked to order in our food truck or trailer, or served from a build-your-own taco bar. Fillings are slow-cooked beforehand and finished on site.

Is taco bar hire right for your event?

Buffet trays can go cold and tired. Our fillings stay hot and the bowls are topped up as guests come back. There is no one-size-fits-all price for taco bar hire. A simple party menu and a full wedding day are very different jobs. Your quote sets it all out.

Dietary needs and planning tips

Mixed diets are straightforward to plan for, because guests can choose what suits them. Here are a few tips for planning:

  • Ensure one filling is vegan
  • Put guests with serious allergies in touch with us early
  • Tell us when guests should eat
  • Ask guests about diets and allergies on the RSVP

Indoors or under cover, the bar carries on whatever the weather, so plan somewhere sheltered if you can.

Our food truck or trailer can serve later in the day, after the taco bar.

The process

Your timings come first. If things run behind, let us know and we’ll adjust where we can. Planning an evening taco bar in Bonchurch? Sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:10pm in late September. After dusk, lights over the station help guests build their tacos.

  1. Tell us the date, the venue, how many guests and any diets.
  2. We plan the fillings and toppings with you and quote for them.
  3. We agree where the table goes and where our vehicle can unload.
  4. Our staff set up the station, keep the fillings hot and top up the bar through service.
  5. Once guests have eaten, we take down the bar and leave the spot tidy.

How to prepare

  • Have a marquee or gazebo ready in case of rain

We quote for your event, which reflects:

  • Food, drinks or both
  • Your choice of food and drinks
  • The number of people
  • Parking and the route in

Access and travel can make a difference to the cost, so tell us about the venue when you ask for a quote. Your quote confirms the full price.

What we need to know

When you get in touch, it helps to tell us:

  • Approximate guest numbers, including children
  • What you’d like on the menu
  • A photo of the space, if it’s a garden or field
  • Access for the truck or trailer, including gates and ground

Not sure what you need yet? No problem: tell us about the occasion and the guests, and we will suggest a menu. When you are ready, tell us about it on our contact page.

Can I do a taco night myself?

Doing it yourself? Start with the quantities: our guide to how many tacos per person helps. Keep tortillas warm in a covered basket, and label anything containing allergens.

Not sure whether to do it yourself or book a caterer? Think about numbers, diets and how much you want to enjoy the day. Contact us for a quote to compare.
